Massive Darkness 2: Hellscape - Undead

With the Heroes done I can make a start on the myriad of enemies and adversaries in Massive Darkness 2. Given that I’ve painted zombies numerous times before, they seemed like a logical next step. Although these guys differ from the usual Undead in that they aren’t mindless zombies but dead bodies possessed by demon spirits. Hence the weapons and armour.

I did mix things up from how I normally paint zombies however. Ordinarily I would prime the miniatures grey and give them a white ink zenithal highlight before applying my colours. For these Undead I instead primed them with Citadel Death Guard Green spray. I then gave them a zenithal highlight with Two Thin Coats Griffon Claw through the airbrush, followed by an all over drybrush of Pallid Wych Flesh.

From there I could make a start on the main colours. I started by giving the skin a coat of Army Painter Speedpaint Malignant Green, a nice sickly colour I use for all my zombies. Next I painted the leather details such as the straps and apron. Keeping with the green theme I painted the skirts with Army Painter Speedpaint Desolate Brown, which is a drab almost olive green. Any metal details, such as the weapons and armour, I painted with Ratling Grime which was then followed by a drybrush of Necron Compound. The result is a grubby metallic look that’s perfect for the Undead.

For the final details, I painted the stream of vomit and the guts on the leader with Army Painter Speedpaint Familiar Pink. The garish pink brings a touch of visual interest to the models, otherwise they’d be a little too dark and drab. Likewise I painted all the boils with a dot of Vallejo Heavy Goldbrown. Normally when I paint boils I would give them a ring of Guilliman Flesh to make them look sore but I figured they looked good enough for game pieces as it is. I then painted the studs on the armour and leather with a dot of Scale75 Thrash Metal.

Lastly, for the bases I simply painted them with Two Thin Coats Dungeon Stone. There isn’t enough room around the Undead to get fancy with texture pastes or scatter products so I simply did not bother.
