Massive Darkness 2: Hellscape - Gargoyles
Having whet my appetite on the Undead and Satyrs it was time to dive into the rest of the enemy mobs. Looking through what was left in the box I figured I could smash through most of them with the right approach. I started with what I considered would be the easiest to do, the gargoyles. As they’re walking piles of rocks I decided that painting them in the same way that I did the Volkus terrain would yield decent results.
I got things started by giving them a prime with Rust-Oleum Espresso Brown and then giving them a heavy zenithal with Colour Forge Standard Grey. Once that was dry I then gave each of the models a more extreme zenithal highlight with Vallejo Cold Grey. Before I went any further, I gave the models a couple thin coats of AK Interactive Ultra Matt Varnish. This had two effects, firstly it took the shine off the satin finish off the Espresso Brown, and secondly it provided a better surface for any subsequent washes I would use to adhere to.
The zenithal highlights had done a decent job of bringing out the texture on the Gargoyles but to further enhance this I gave the models an all over drybrush of Two Thin Coats Carcharodon Grey followed by an all over wash of Army Painter Military Shade.

At this point I could have called them done but I wanted to try something I had seen a few times before. I mixed some PVA glue with flock until it made a fairly thick paste, which I then dabbed onto the upper areas of the Gargoyles to simulate moss. The mixture was very vibrant while wet but it did dull down nicely when it dried. Despite adding some nice texture to the model I decided to bring it out a little more by giving the moss another wash of Army Painter Military Shade. As a final detail I carefully picked out the eyes with a dot of Pro Acryl Ivory, which provided a nice bit of contrast with the surrounding dark browns and greys.
For the bases I first basecoated them with Two Twin Coats Scorched Earth, mostly to tidy up any overspill of the grey paints. I then covered the bases in PVA glue and dunked them in a tub of Geek Gaming Scenics Base Ready Patchy Plains. I then sealed this down with a few spritzes of Geek Gaming Scenics Matt Sealant. To finish things off I painted the rims of the bases with a matt black paint.
Black robes and white wings, at first glance these Fallen Angels may seem daunting but by keeping things simple we can make sure a paint job isn’t the reason they have turned from the Light of Heaven.
