Massive Darkness 2: Hellscape - Skeletons
Next up for the Massive Darkness 2 enemies were the Skeletons. To get things started I primed them with Rust-Oleum Espresso Brown before giving them a zenithal highlight which Army Painter Skeleton Bone through the airbrush. To take the shine of the Espresso Brown, I then gave the models a couple coats of AK Interactive Ultra Matt Varnish. The zenithal highlight over the dark brown had done a good job of setting the lights and shadows but to push things a little further I gave each model a drybrush of Pro Acryl Ivory.
From there I could make a start putting some colours on the model. I wasn’t sure how the brown and ivory basecoat would affect contrast paints compared to the usual black and white undercoat, but I was keen to find out. I started by giving the various bits of armour a coat of Basilicanum Grey and the tunic a coat of Garaghak’s Sewer. The leather straps meanwhile I painted with Gore Grunta Fur. For the shield, I painted the backing with Wyldwood and the facing with Flesh Tearer’s Red. While I had the latter out, I also used this for the inside of the cloaks. For the fur on the cloak I decided to keep with the brown and red tones of the model and gave it a coat of Army Painter Speedpaint Burnished Red. For the metallic details like the sword blade and shield boss, I used Army Painter Speedpaint Broadsword Silver. The sword handle meanwhile, I painted with Scale75 Old Copper. Lastly, to tie everything together, and to bring some definition to the bone areas I had thus far left unpainted, I gave the models an all over coat of Sonic Sledgehammer’s Marine Juice wash.

For the bases I kept things very simple, first dabbing on some Armageddon Dust texture paint and then giving it a coat of Seraphim Sepia wash to bring out that texture. I toyed with the idea of drybrushing the bases, or perhaps sticking down a grass tuft, but I felt they were good enough for some enemy mooks. So I finished things off by painted the rims of the base with a matt black.
Today we take advantage of the bright colour of bone to cheat our way to lights and shadows. That way we can get these Skeletons done in no time at all.
