Massive Darkness 2: Hellscape - Fire Entities

I have been wading through the enemy mobs for Massive Darkness 2 but hit a bit of a block once I saw the Fire Entities. Flame elementals can be a bit of pain to paint, especially if there’s a bunch of stuff like armour engulfed in the flames. Which is why I have put these off for a little while. But it was time to get stuck in.

To get things started I primed the miniatures with Colour Forge Standard Grey. From there I basecoated the entire model with Archive-X Reefer Yellow. It was admittedly slow going, even with the airbrush. To speed things up I gave the models a zenithal highlight with Liquitex Titanium White acrylic ink. I then came back in with the Reefer Yellow which produced a brighter and more solid coat over the white ink. Once I had a solid yellow basecoat I was ready to paint in the flames.

The thing about flames is they start off hot and become cooler, and therefore more red, the more they move away from their source of heat. A quick and easy way to move from yellow to orange to red is with drybrushing. That being said, I did first give the models an all over coat of Iyanden Yellow contrast paint. It’s kind of an orangey-yellow but the models have a lot of texture on them that the contrast paint really takes advantage of. From there I gave the models a somewhat heavy drybrush of Jokaero Orange followed by a lighter drybrush of Archive-X Caboose Red. The effect, whilst not perfect, is more than satisfactory for my needs.

With the flames done that was most of the model complete, all I really had left to do was the armour, weapons and the bases. The armour was the most simple and I had a plan to do the weapon and bases at the same time. For the armour though, I just gave them a coat of Scale75 Black Metal. I did toy with the idea of giving them a wash but honestly there wasn’t all that much texture to them.

For the weapon blades and bases, I first gave them a basecoat of Jokaero Orange followed by a layer of Troll Slayer Orange. The former is required because the latter has poor coverage. For the blades I then used a bit of sponge to dab on some Army Painter Matt Black around the edges, giving the impression that the swords are heated from within. For the bases, I achieved a similar effect by giving them a thick coat of Mordant Earth crackle paint. Once dry the paint split apart showing the orange layer underneath. The flakes of crackle paint can be a little delicate so to lock them in place I gave the bases a spritzing with some Geek Gaming Scenics Matt Sealant. I finished the bases off by painting the rims with a matt black.

As a final detail, I ran some of the white ink I had used earlier into the eyes. I then painted the eyes, first with Pylar Glacier and then with a dot of Army Painter Matt White in the middle of each eye. This gives the impression that the eyes are the white hot souls of the Fire Entities.
