Zombicide Invader - Civilian Extras Part III

As mentioned in the previous article, there were a number of models in the Zombicide Invader Civilian Extras box that I would be unable to paint via the slapchop method. In the case of the previous batch, it was due to their white power armour. This batch would be a fairly diverse bunch, (mostly) having their own reasons for being immune to the slapchop. The four plucky heroes in this batch would be Hugo Harker, Dorian the Grey, Doctor Whutt, and Doctor Dick. To prep them I superglued some rocks to the bases and got them primed. Hugo Harker was primed black, the rest in a neutral grey.

Hugo Harker

Despite having the face of Andre the Giant for some reason, this guy is clearly a nod to Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, the antagonist of Dune.

I had primed him black because I wanted to use the airbrush to give his suit a nice even coat of Vallejo Metal Colour Magnesium, which goes much nicer over a black undercoat. His cloak I painted with Screamer Pink, and the trim with Rhinox Hide. His undersuit I painted with Mephiston Red. The vials on his hip I painted with a few thin coats of Vallejo Night Blue and the nodules on his armour with Incubi Darkness. His face I painted with Cadian Fleshtone and his hair Jokaero Orange.

For the remaining metallic details I grabbed my Scale75 Metal ‘n’ Alchemy pots. I painted his chainsaw and pistol with Thrash Metal, his pendant with Dwarven Gold and the ribbed tubing on his suit with Old Copper.

For washes, I gave his skin the usual coat of Reikland Fleshshade. For everything else except the armour I gave that a wash of Nuln Oil. For the armour, I decided to run a line of Black Templar contrast paint between the panels.

With that done I layered his face back up with Cadian Fleshtone, then on the vials and nodules I layered them up to make them pop a bit more. For the vials on his hip I mixed progressively more Two Thin Coats Celestial Blue with Night Blue for each layer. For the nodules I did likewise with Flash Gitz Yellow and Incubi Darkness.

Dorian the Grey

Your classic Grey alien that’s been a staple of science fiction for almost as long as there has been science fiction. And Dorian being a sneaky nod to “The Picture of Dorian Gray” by Oscar Wilde.

I started by painting more or less the whole miniature with a couple thin coats of Ulthuan Grey. Which as the model is so small took approximately two brush strokes per coat. Once that was done I painted the undersuit with Fenrisian Grey and his boots with Corvus Black. His skin I painted with Two Thin Coats Dungeon Stone. His pistol and the grenades on his belt I painted with Scale75 Thrash Metal.

As the armour sections were so small, rather than recess shade between them I instead decided to give them a wash of Apothecary White contrast paint. Which nicely brought out the detail without me having to layer it again. Everything else got a coat of Nuln Oil. I finished off the model by applying a bit of Warp Lightning contrast paint to his ray gun. To make it look more Sci-Fi.

Doctor Whutt

Clearly Doc Brown from the Back To The Future series mixed with Doc Ock from Spiderman. Perhaps with a bit of Doctor Who as well, judging by the name at any rate.

I started off by painting Doc Whutt’s lab coat with a couple of thin coats of Ulthuan Grey. His top I painted with XV-88 and his trousers with Macragge Blue. His skin I painted the usual Cadian Fleshtone and his hair I painted with Vallejo Khaki. His boots and the straps around his legs I painted with Rhinox Hide. The arms of his backpack I painted with Corvus Black. The bullets across his chest I painted with Scale75 Dwarven Gold. His backpack, its grabby hands and the various spanners I painted with Scale75 Thrash Metal. As a final detail, I painted the straw of the cup he’s holding with Vallejo Squid Pink.

For the washes, I gave his coat a coat (pun intended) of Apothecary White contrast paint. His top, boot and hair I washed with Army Painter Strong Tone. The trousers and backpack I washed with Nuln Oil. At this point, I put a bit of Wyldwood contrast paint in his cup. What is he drinking? Coffee through a straw? Or maybe hot cola? We may never know.

Doctor Dick

Unashamedly Rick Sanchez from Rick & Morty, we did have Evil Morty in a previous article after all.

Being modelled after a cartoon character the paint job turned out to be really simple. I painted his skin with Cadian Fleshtone, his hair with Fenrisian Grey, his jumper with Two Thin Coats Celestial Blue, his lab coat with Ulthuan Grey, his trousers with Rhinox Hide and his shoes with Corvus Black. I finished the base coats off by painting the bottle with Caliban Green and his pistol with Scale 75 Thrash Metal.

With that done, I gave the lab coat a wash of Apothecary White contrast paint, his skin a wash of Reikland Fleshshade, his trousers a wash of Army Painter Strong Tone and his jumper a wash of Nuln Oil. I finished the model off by layering a bit of Cadian Fleshtone on his face.

Bases

I used the same process for the bases that I have for all the other Zombicide Invader miniatures. I started by painting the rocks with Vallejo Fire Red then covering the remainder of the base with Vallejo Red Oxide texture paste. Once that had fully dried, I washed it with Reikland Fleshshade. I then drybrushed the bases with Kindleflame Dry paint, making sure to get a bit on the boots of the models, so that it looked a bit like dust. Finally, I painted the rims of the base with a matt black.
