Age of Sigmar - Rotbringer Sorcerer

My Maggotkin now had their Lord, but he needed a second-in-command. A devious confidante to plot his demise. Enter the Rotbringer Sorcerer, a relatively recent addition to the Maggotkin range. I got him assembled, choosing the hooded head and leaving him separate from his base. He has some nooks and crannies that would be tricky to get to otherwise. I toyed with the idea of leaving his backpack separate but ultimately decided to glue it in place. I then primed him with Colour Forge Standard Grey.

As always I started with the skin, giving a couple layers of Two Thin Coats Griffon Claw. Next I painted the hood and skirt with a Death Guard Green, part of me wondered if I should have primed him in Death Guard Green to make things a bit easier but it is what it is. The underskirt I painted with Vallejo Heavy Goldbrown, which nicely broke up the green on the lower half of the model. The wooden areas I painted with Vallejo Khaki while the backpack and pouch I painted with Rhinox Hide. Next I painted a bunch of things with Army Painter Skeleton Bone, including the skull belt buckle, candles, parchment and the wings on the front. The last one because it would make base coating them with Ulthuan Grey much easier. Despite not using the fly head the model still has some fly parts like one of his legs and his third arm. For the metallic details I painted everything that needed to be silver, such as the chains and scythe blade, with Scale75 Thrash Metal. The Nurgle symbol on the scythe and the shoulder armour I painted with Scale75 Old Copper.

Moving onto the washes, I started by giving the skin a coat of Reikland Fleshshade. The robes, backpack and silver details meanwhile got a coat of Army Painter Strong Tone. To really darken the silver areas I gave them a second wash, this time with Army Painter Dark Tone. The wings on the front of the skirt coat a coat of Drakenhof Nightshade while the wooden details were given a coat of Wyldwood. Lastly, the candles were given a coat of Seraphim Sepia.

The wash had darkened down the skin quite a lot so to brighten it up again I painted a thin layer of Two Thin Coats Griffon Claw onto the raised and flat areas, leaving the wash in the recesses. The next step was to paint a ring of Guilliman Flesh around each of the boils to make them look sore and then to dot them with some Vallejo Heavy Goldbrown to help them stand out. Lastly for the skin I glazed some Army Painter Purple Tone on the underside of the belly, not enough to bring out texture like a wash but just enough to change the hue of the skin to a bruised purple.

The Strong Tone wash had also darkened the fabric areas of the model so, like the skin, I painted a thin layer of Death Guard Green on the raised and flat areas to bring some brightness back.

I then moved onto the final details, such as picking out the small leather straps with Skrag Brown and the hand crawling out of his backpack with Two Thin Coats Dwarven Skin. Next I base coated the candle flames with a couple coats of Army Painter Matt White before then painting the flames with Warp Lightning and the smoke with Basilicanum Grey. For some final touches I scrawled some Cygor Brown on the parchment by way of writing and even scribbled a little Nurgle symbol. And lastly, I added a few dabs of Nihilakh Oxide to the bronze areas to look like verdigris.

With the model complete I moved onto the base. First things first gluing him to said base so I knew how much space I had to work with, which as it turns out is not a lot. I then added Vallejo Thick Brown Mud which once dry, was given a wash of Athonian Camoshade followed by a drybrush of Tyrant Skull. I then dabbed on some PVA glue and sprinkled on some Geek Gaming Scenics Base Read Forest Floor and then followed that up some some static grass. Lastly, I dabbed on some AK Interactive Swamp Water Gel and painted the rim with a couple coats of Warboss Green.
